The AIDS Media Center   yes PROGRAMMING   yes TRAINING

The AIDS Media Center (AMC) is a targeted resource portal for media professionals covering the global issues of AIDS. The mission of this partner-driven website and initiative is to enhance the creative energies of local and international media professionals and organizations to play significant and contributing roles in the fight against HIV. The site provides useful tools and resources for media organizations and professionals -- e.g., radio, print, television broadcast -- to deepen their knowledge of -- and, ultimately, the depth, quality and impact of their HIV coverage.


The Barefoot Workshops   yes PROGRAMMING   yes TRAINING

Barefoot Workshops is a media based organization where adults and youth are taught video, photography, music, and art as a way to document their surroundings, make change in the world, and most importantly, make change within themselves. Of particular interest are the seven films made by staff of the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation in Cape Town, South Africa about encouraging behavior change in their community.

BBC World Service   yes PROGRAMMING   no TRAINING

The BBC is the largest broadcasting corporation in the world. Its purpose is to enrich people’s lives with programs that inform, educate and entertain. Funded by a government grant, BBC World Service broadcasts to the world on radio, on TV and online, providing news and information in 33 languages. One piece to consider is HIV & Me, a two-part documentary in which Stephen Fry examines attitudes toward HIV.


The China AIDS Media Project   yes PROGRAMMING   no TRAINING

Made in cooperation with the Chinese Ministry of Health, the China AIDS Media Project has produced many PSA campaigns and documentaries. Jackie Chan, Pu Cunxin and Peng Liyuan, Yao Ming and Magic Johnson star in these PSAs promoting HIV/AIDS prevention. Of their six documentaries available, The Blood of Yingzhou District won an Academy Award in 2007 documenting the life of children orphaned by AIDS.

The Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership

In collaboration with local educators in underserved countries, Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership has harnessed the educational power of television by creating over 200 Learning Centers where students, teachers and entire communities can access and share information. The Global Network of Young TV Producers on HIV and AIDS

The Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) with support from UNESCO has been training young TV professionals for communicating effectively on matters related to HIV and AIDS. The project has produce three compilations of mini-documentaries on HIV/AIDS in various countries throughout Asia as an outcome of the training.


The House Is Small but the Welcome Is Big

The House Is Small has developed two projects, one in Cape Town, South Africa and one in Maputo Mozambique to teach women and children affected by HIV/AIDS how to share their lives through photography. The participants have created a powerful body of documentary photography that gives a human face to the continuing global AIDS crisis and, in particular, its impact on women and children. Videos, podcasts, and many many photographs are available from the two projects.

Interagency Youth Working Group   no PROGRAMMING   yes TRAINING

The Interagency Youth Working Group, network of nongovernmental agencies, donors, and cooperating agencies supported by USAID, provides global technical leadership to prevent HIV/AIDS and improve reproductive health among young people ages 10-24 in developing countries. The IYWG synthesizes and disseminates new information on youth research and programs and promotes best practices among youth programs globally through a Web site, monthly email digests (Youth InfoNet), new publications, technical consultations, and by linking with other agencies.

Along with influencing policy and training in multimedia, Internews produces and coordinates television and radio programming to strengthen the independent media sector, to bridge the conflicts between nations and peoples, and to provide crucial information to people in times of humanitarian crises. Check out the audio, video and print stories produced by reporters and talk show hosts trained and supported by the Local Voices program for World AIDS Day 2007. The pieces focus on the link between gender and HIV and AIDS.

Johns Hopkins Media/Materials Clearinghouse (M/MC)

M/MC is an international resource for all those with an interest in health communication materials: pamphlets, posters, audiotapes, videos, training materials, job aids, electronic media and other media/materials designed to promote public health. Using the Health Communication Materials Database you can search the collection of health communication materials by country, subject, medium, or language. They have 3571 materials available within the topic of HIV/AIDS.

The Kaiser Video Library is a free, online service providing rights-free cover footage related to HIV/AIDS for journalists around the world who report on public health issues. Generic cover footage is also available. Content has been generously donated by the following organizations: Family Health International, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs, and The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on the Public Broadcasting System.

NPR is a privately supported, not-for-profit membership organization that produces and distributes noncommercial news, talk, and entertainment programming. NPR broadcasts material through their website, podcasts, and Member Station that serve local listeners with a combination of national and local programming. NPR is constantly airing stories on HIV/AIDS, including their piece called HIV/AIDS; a Leading Cause of Death in the Caribbean.

Population Media Center (PMC) strives to improve the health and well being of people around the world through locally written and produced serialized soap operas for radio and television. The organization's work is to educate people about the benefits of small families, encourage the use of effective family planning methods, elevate women's status and promote gender equity. PMC offers social-content serial dramas and a great training guide and best practices manual on the application of the serial drama methodology.

The World Security Institute's Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting sponsors the independent reporting that media organizations are increasingly less willing to undertake on their own. The Center's goal is to raise the standard of coverage of global affairs, and to do so in a way that engages both the broad public and government policy. Of interest is the multimedia project Heroes of HIV including articles, video documentaries and interactive web materials on AIDS in the Caribbean and the ties between the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Palm Beach County.

Soul City Institute is a dynamic and innovative multi-media health promotion and social change project. Through drama and entertainment Soul City reaches more than 16 million South Africans. This is done through 2 main brands, Soul City targeted at adults and Soul Buddyz targeted at 8 - 12 year olds and adults in their lives. The second big program that Soul City Institute is involved in is the Regional Program which is a partnership with local organizations in eight Southern African countries. It has also been broadcast in many parts of Africa as well as Latin America, the Caribbean and South East Asia. Soul City examines many health and development issues, imparting information and impacting on social norms, attitudes and practice.

SABC is a partner of Soul City and also a member of the ABMP and GMAI.

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit project whose mission is to honor and celebrate the personal histories of people living in America through listening. Since 2003, tens of thousands of everyday people have interviewed family and friends through StoryCorps. Each conversation is recorded on a CD for the participants and archived at the US Library of Congress. Millions listen to the award-winning broadcasts on public radio and the Internet. StoryCorps is the largest oral history project of its kind, creating a growing portrait of who Americans really are.

The United Nations Multimedia site offers links to radio programs, television programs, videos, and photographs. The cite itself, as well as the programming, comes in many languages. Ask about the serial radio and television soap opera Heart and Soul intended to spread HIV/AIDS prevention messages and awareness about other issues affecting Africa.

Zagreb Film   yes PROGRAMMING   no TRAINING

Since 1963, Zagreb Film has produced more than 600 educational films, many of which are in Croatian. Their biggest global success is the famous character of Professor Balthazar. Many of the films presented in the Zagreb Film Festival have HIV themes.
